JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY:

The Engineer is responsible under the direction of the Captain to assist the Leverman in the safe and efficient operation, maintenance and repair of the dredge and associated machinery and equipment. The Engineer has limited accomplishment (training) in all aspects of dredge operation, maintenance and repair.

The Engineer’s tasks and duties are routinely assigned by the Captain and Leverman or management. The Engineer is expected to exercise due diligence in the performance of duties in the interest of the crew, employer, customer and marine public at large.

Engineer shall maintain regulatory compliance with regard to licenses and certifications.

The primary purpose of this job is to provide both sick and vacation relief for the live-aboard crew of the dredge. The live-aboard shift is a week-on week-off schedule. When no relief work is available, the second purpose of this position is working shoreside, performing maintenance on the equipment when such work is available.

(Both watch) Engineers are responsible for and shall share and/or remain informed/capable of all duties to include but not limited to the following:

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Administrative

  • Dredge Offload logs (assist Leverman, submit to CAPTAIN)
  • Weekly Dredge checklists (assist Leverman, submit to CAPTAIN)
  • Participate in the development of the load/offload
  • Load/off-load performance logs (reported to CAPTAIN)
  • Inventory lists
  • Tug engine room logs
  • Dredge engine room logs
  • Computer load logging/tracking/reporting system operation (assist Leverman, in cooperation with CAPTAIN)
  • Report Purchase order control, coding, recording, ordering and receiving to CAPTAIN
  • Report Vessel inspections to CAPTAIN (RCP, Security, daily/watch, operational)
  • Submit/review Payroll time sheets with CAPTAIN
  • Confirm communication of vacation requests, vacancies due to illness/injury or misconduct.
  • Participate in Safety meetings/drills/training
  • Submit MSHA site inspection books to CAPTAIN
  • Maintain a current understanding of Memorandums
  • Tug/Dredge status, report findings to CAPTAIN and Dredge Superintendent or a member of management acting in his stead
  • Provide specific information or data requested by management promptly
  • Review schedules/voyage plans, contribute practical insight promptly

WORK REQUIREMENTS:

Operational

  • Seeks out and takes direction from Leverman/CAPTAIN/management
  • Perform/assist in safe, practical and efficient/economic operation, maintenance and repair of dredge
  • Monitors MSHA compliance
  • Performs/Reports corrective action to maintain MSHA compliance
  • Report to Leverman/CAPTAIN regularly
  • Monitors material quality (reports to Leverman); reports material quality and production issues to Leverman
  • Perform/assist operation, maintenance and repair of tugboat under direction of CAPTAIN
  • Ensure proper stowage of equipment, tools, parts and material
  • Ensure proper use of equipment, tools, parts and material
  • Ensure work areas are kept organized, clean and safe
  • Train subordinates in all aspects of operation, maintenance and repair
  • Ensure/monitor/maintain radio and phone communications (when CAPTAIN/Leverman not present)
  • Report/log/document unusual or unexpected occurrences – illness, injury, damage, or misconduct.
  • Act as “Person in charge” during petroleum transfer (when CAPTAIN/Leverman not present)
  • Update dispatch/management to significant delays, problems or departures from plan (when CAPTAIN/Leverman not present)
  • Monitor/report condition and performance of equipment
  • Facilitate progressive training of crews- general skills, specific skills and safety
  • Oversee training of new crew
  • Ensure proper operation of regulatory tracking/logging equipment (coordinate with CAPTAIN/Leverman)
  • Acquire and maintain an understanding of product specifications and quality
  • Acquire and maintain an understanding/skill of the dredge operation and equipment to be able to relieve the Leverman for breaks/meals/head-calls or secure the dredge in the event of Leverman incapacitation.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned
  • When required/requested, perform duties on the tug as directed by CAPTAIN.
  • Relieve crew for break/meal/head-call rotation.
  • Participate in the preparation of meals.
  • Participate in the immediate and continual cleaning of galley, head(s), passages and common areas.
  • Keep and clean personal bunk area.
  • Keep and clean immediate work area (lever-room and dredge engine-room)
  • Encourage a cohesive and congenial atmosphere for a crew living close quarters
  • Implement/Adhere to company policies, practices and procedures
  • Ensure the Dredge Superintendent or a member of the management team acting in his stead is kept informed of all significant matters relating to his assigned endeavor, vessel/unit and crew.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prior experience as Deckhand
  • Knowledge, experience, skills, talent and ability to operate, maintain/repair dredge and tugboat machinery.
    • Intermediate fitter
    • Intermediate welder
    • Basic Hydraulics
    • Basic Electrical
    • Basic Mechanics
    • Elementary fluid flow (hydraulic dredging)
    • Basic rigging
    • Elementary pipe-fitting
  • Aptitude for operating machinery/equipment
  • Basic seamanship skills and knowledge– splicing, rigging etc.
  • Organizational and communication skills for effective teamwork.
  • Ability to think through unexpected events effectively.
  • Ambition, creativity, resolve, common sense and good judgment for effective problem solving.
  • Administrative skills to maintain records and inventories.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Must join the Inland Boatmen’s Union within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license from State of residence.
  • Valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) and Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
