Essential Functions:
The individual assigned to this position must, with or without reasonable accommodations, be able to perform the following essential functions:
- Enter and move through manholes to reach and work in internally confined spaces.
- Manipulate and operate all machines and hand/power tools essential to the performance of the position of Outside Machinist.
- Transverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights.
- Transverse and negotiate uneven surfaces.
- Ascend and work at heights of up to 50+ feet.
- Ability to read and comprehend manuals, drawings and blueprints.
Job Responsibilities
An Outside Machinist performs a great number of tasks, including:
- Necessary machine work, including dismantling, repairing, and reassembling of light and heavy machinery.
- Installing and repairing gasoline and diesel engines in boats, tugs, trawlers, portable equipment, etc. Following these specifications:
- positions engine over mounting holes, using chain hoist;
- bolts engines to mounts, using hand tools;
- connects fuel, oil, and waterlines to engines;
- installs engine controls, propeller shaft, and propeller;
- attaches test instruments, such as tachometer and voltmeter to engine;
- starts engine and records operating data, such as revolutions per minute and voltage output.
- Installs ship machinery, such as propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, ventilating equipment, and steering gear, working from blueprints and using hand tools, calipers and micrometers.
- Disassembles defective engines and repairs or replaces damaged parts, using hand tools.
- Disassembles propulsion and steering components, propellers, propeller shafts, rudders, and associated bearings and determines usable components and reassembles.
- Must be able to perform alignments
