ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Requires set-up and use of portable burning/heating torches for steel plates and shapes using propane, acetylene, and oxygen.
  • Requires set-up and use of cutting devices for aluminum plates and shapes typically including Circular Saws, Band Saws, Chop Saws, Jig Saws, Plasma cutter and cutting wheels on grinders.
  • Lays out and fabricates steel and aluminum structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and braces them in position within hull of ship for welding.
  • Lays out position of parts within hull form, working from blueprints or templates and using hand tools.
  • Locates and marks reference lines, such as center, buttock and frame lines.
  • Aligns parts in relation to each other, using jacks, come-a-longs, turnbuckles, clips, wedges and mauls.
  • Marks locations of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding.
  • Installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets and clips.
  • May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
  • Rigs chain falls and come-a-longs.
  • Depending on size and weight of materials being handled, mobile crane or forklifts are used for handling and transportation. Also, depending on size and weight, the designated rigging crew will move the material into place.
  • Provides a variety of skilled welding (stick welding, wire feed welding, Tig welding, carbon arc gouging) of steel and aluminum plate, shapes and pipe in the repair of/or construction of vessels and associated equipment. Responsibilities include initial set up, material preparation, welding, testing of welds upon completion and assisting fitters as required.
  • May be required to travel to jobsites away from Shipyard and utilize company vehicle.

JOB CONDITIONS:

Physical requirements include ability to sit, stand, ascend/descend stairs, walking, kneeling, stooping, using a ladder, on an incline, reaching overhead. Will be working with hand tools and ability to manipulate small objects. Must also be able to work in a shipyard and in a vessel environment e.g.; dust, smoke, wet/humid, and high noise levels. Work is generally outdoors, in all weather conditions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2 years welding experience required, preferably within the maritime industry, (aluminum experience preferred).
  • Strong welding skills.
  • Comprehension of fabrication techniques.
  • Welding Certificate preferred but not required. Valid Driver’s License is required.
